Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

What is Breast Reduction? Breast reduction is a surgical procedure performed to decrease the size and volume of large, heavy breasts. This operation is preferred by patients looking to alleviate physical discomfort, improve their aesthetic appearance, or both. In addition to reducing overall size, breast reduction surgery corrects sagging (ptosis), resulting in a more proportional and lifted appearance.

Why is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed? The primary goal of breast reduction is to relieve physical symptoms caused by overly large breasts, such as chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain. It also helps prevent skin irritation under the breast fold, improves posture, and enhances ease during daily physical activities. Additionally, many women choose this procedure to overcome difficulties in finding well-fitting clothing or to resolve self-confidence issues related to breast size.

Methods Used in Breast Reduction Surgery Depending on the patient’s anatomy and the desired outcome, several techniques may be utilized:

  • Surgical Incision Techniques: These methods vary based on the initial size and shape of the breasts. Most commonly, an incision is made around the areola and extends vertically down to the breast fold (Lollipop technique). In cases of significant reduction, a horizontal incision along the breast fold may also be added (Anchor technique). Through these incisions, excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue are removed to reshape the breast.

  • Liposuction-Assisted Reduction: For patients who require less tissue removal or those with good skin elasticity, liposuction can be used to suction out excess fat. This minimally invasive method results in minimal scarring and a faster recovery.

How is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed? The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes precise incisions to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. The nipple-areola complex is then repositioned and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped for a firmer, smaller contour. The operation typically takes between 2 to 4 hours. Depending on the extent of the procedure, patients may be discharged on the same day or stay overnight for observation.

What is the Recovery Process Like? Mild pain, swelling, and bruising are common during the first few days following surgery. Wearing a specialized surgical bra or compression garment is essential to support the healing process and protect the new breast shape. Patients can generally return to work and light daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks. However, strenuous physical activities and heavy exercise should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.

Is Breastfeeding Possible After Breast Reduction Surgery? The ability to breastfeed after a reduction depends heavily on the surgical technique used. While modern techniques aim to preserve the milk ducts and nerve supply to the nipple, some methods may impact the milk glands. If breastfeeding is a priority for you in the future, it is vital to discuss this in detail with your surgeon during the consultation.

Is There an Age Limit for Breast Reduction Surgery? Breast reduction is ideally performed on individuals who have fully completed their breast development, usually at age 18 or older. However, in cases where large breasts cause severe physical pain or spinal issues at a younger age, the surgery can be performed earlier. It is important that the patient is mature enough to understand the procedure and maintain realistic expectations.
